I go nowhere without a sketchbook and the sketchbook is where it all begins. They mark all the places I've been; they contain all the ideas I've had for paintings. Notes, scribbles, cartoons and caricatures, worked-up drawings, half-baked ideas, memos to self. Charcoal, pencil, ink, watercolour; conversations overheard, films I've seen, books read, family and friends I spend my time with- ghosts or fragments of them all end up in these pages.
